Darcy launched Second Language Design in 2013, bringing together a talented group of freelance creatives to serve clients who were interested in top level work with less red tape and overhead. With over 12 years of design experience, she’s honed her skills in the Creative Director role at Rubenstein PR, one of the nation’s foremost public relations firms. In her prior role there, she gained experience launching a creative department and managing all in-house and client design projects from concept to completion, including corporate identity systems, marketing pieces, and websites.

Over the course of her career, Darcy has developed corporate identities and national campaigns for some of the most distinguished lifestyle, business and consumer brands. In a previous role, she was Jr. Art Director at IN Marketing Services where she worked on national shopper marketing creative for retailers including Target, Walmart, Stop & Shop and Costco for leading brands including Pond’s, Caress, Skippy, and SC Johnson. Nellie is an accomplished, senior-level consultant who is a naturally strategic, creative, results-driven business leader and sales executive with over 15 years experience. Her unique background includes experience in publishing, broadcast, and digital arenas along with experience in content creation, marketing, PR and strategic counsel for global and national brands and agencies, as well as start ups and small businesses.

Nellie is highly regarded for her integrity and perseverance, fostering collaboration to achieve results and ROI. As a consummate media professional and strategic thinker, she has a proven track record of success and is extremely well-connected. She has been instrumental in helping clients grow their overall market share and strengthen brands through all types of Integrated Multiplatform Media campaigns with hundreds of clients including brands such as Proctor & Gamble, Prudential, Calvin Klein, Astrazeneca, Monique Llhuilier, Cotton Inc, Pepsico and Tiaa-Cref. Nellie spent the early part of her career at Encompass Media, The Nielsen Company, Vidicom, and as Vice President of Client Solutions for Medialink, a Broadcast Communications and Digital production company prior to becoming a consultant.

Valerie has extensive experience helping start-ups and social enterprises craft their brand message, develop strategy, and find partners. She specializes in market research and consumer insight, business planning and strategy, and social impact assessment. An avid lover of travel, Valerie discovered her talent for business strategy and market research while working with farmers in rural Burkina Faso. Ever since then, she has been consulting with a number of NYC-based businesses on market expansion and business strategy. She is actively engaged in NYC’s start-up scene and has participated in events like Strategy Hack and Amplify Good’s Summer Takeover as a marketing and brand advisor to help start-ups accelerate their growth. Most recently, she worked on brand positioning for a mid-sized mortgage company and a business plan for the We See Beauty Foundation’s pilot program, a worker-owned cooperative to benefit women from low-income neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York.


John is a senior level web and app developer with 12 years experience, including several years experience working at one of the world’s top digital agencies. He works in a wide array of different web technologies including JavaScript, Node.js, jQuery, HTML, LESS, CSS, IIS, nginx, SQL, MongoDB, Meteor.js, ZSH, Grunt, Handlebar templates, Jade templates, Asp.Net MVC, C# and Visual Studio. Throughout his career, he has worked with brands including Verizon, Nikon, Microsoft, General Mills, U.S. Army and Hampton Ambassador.


Dain has been coding and experimenting with back end web development for several years and has experience building WordPress and other custom websites. He completed General Assembly’s Web Development Immersive program where he focused on JavaScript and worked extensively with React and Node/Express. His background is in writing, biology, and customer service, which makes him an exceptional developer to have on the 2L team. Prior to his professional career he earned his Bachelor degree from Oberlin College.


Miriam has over 10 years of experience as a creative in the advertising industry in New York City and has worked at some of the the most renowned agencies in the world, including Publicis, DraftFCB and Ogilvy. She has art directed both national and locally based campaigns working with a wide array of reputable clients such as Castrol, The American Red Cross and Nestlé Waters. She is a visual thinker and believes great design has the power to change the world.



Tiffany joined Second Language Design in 2014 and has over 11 years experience, holding project-based relationships with R/GA, Y&R, Porter Novelli, Hyperakt and Leroy + Clarkson. Some of her most noteworthy clients include Timberland, NBCUniversal, Gillette Venus, UNICEF, CBS and Bristol-Myers Squibb; but she also enjoys creating identity packages for small and medium sized businesses. She uses each project as an opportunity to utilize her fringe talents including perfect color acuity, a love of paper, a previous career in illustration, copy editing, a brain built for system-building and master-level comprehension of industry standard design software.


Dan has over a decade of experience spearheading digital marketing projects with a focus on SEO and Content Strategy. Following roles with NBC, Youcast, NBC Sports Digital Team and more, Dan has worked with hundreds of websites ranging from large media properties, fashion brands, small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. Known for her storytelling and media strategic skills, Raina is a highly experienced PR executive who has served a wide variety of big-name brands, non-profits, public affairs clients and startup companies through her tenures at Rubenstein PR, where she served as Director of Media Relations, and at MBooth& Associates where she held the title of Senior VP. She has over 25 years experience. At MBooth, where she worked for 15 years, Raina won numerous prestigious awards for campaigns she helped develop. She represented such clients as American Express, Avon, Wharton School of Business, JCPenney, Zales, Unilever Interactive Unit, AIG, KPMG, Ernst & Young, CareerMosaic and Aerosoles. She has also worked with a variety of non-profits including the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach’s This World: The Values Network, and Birthright.

Raina began her public relations career at Markham/Novell Communications, where she helped Jim Henson Productions enhance the appeal of Miss Piggy, Kermit and friends for licensors, helped promote Bob Guccione’s magazines, and helped launch Erno Rubik’s Magic during a worldwide tour. Prior to embarking on her PR career, Raina worked as a journalist/editor and trained to become an agent at the William Morris Agency.


Jon is a NYC-based Director/Producer who has created a successful freelance career with clients such as Vevo and AM Only. He is a Co-Founder of Stand Up NY Labs, a NYC-based media company formed in partnership with Manhattan’s famed Stand Up NY Comedy Club. Throughout his career, he has filmed with some of the biggest names in music and comedy including Wu-Tang Clan, Tiesto, Skrillex and Charlie Murphy. His expertise in directing, producing and editing is complimented by his professional, easy-going approach.


April is a freelance writer who is as creative as she is strategic. As a former award-winning journalist who later worked her way up the public relations ladder in NYC, April excels in crafting compelling narratives that embody a brand and make it relevant to the target audience. April currently heads up her own communications firm, which offers business writing services and strategic communications counsel. She is also the mastermind behind Help Write This, which provides “Professional writing for personal things,” for everyday people.

With more than 12 years of experience representing Fortune 100 companies and their executives, April excels at drafting strategic messaging that conveys intangible brand attributes and subtle points of differentiation. She has also assisted with some of the world’s leading fashion, lifestyle, and advertising photographers, including Bruce Weber and Williams Abranowicz.
